Just stop! The whole world knows you are intelligent. Everyone knows that you have gone to college. We all know that you are professional. We don't care!
You are completely useless to the rest of us if you are worried more about the nit-picky details, the wording of an email, avoidance of responsibility, and the covering of your a**. We get it. The problem is you are strangling the life out of any enjoyment in working with you.
We understand that sometimes our emails can be vague and that the devil is in the details. That is why we hired you, to work out the details. We waste more time in trying to communicate with you to get you to work than actually getting the job done. We understand that you have an opinion and we value it at the appropriate time. Stop with the "per our conversations". It is pompous and just lets everyone know that you will be pointing fingers at others instead of working towards the common goal.
What is the common goal? Educating students. Stop and think about the spirit of the communication. Are we trying to "Get you"? No! we don't have time to worry about messing with you. Are we just trying to facilitate with a sense of urgency the importance of educating students? Is your problem, question or issue life threatening, detrimental to student learning or health? If yes call the appropriate medical professionals. If no RELAX!
Remember the spirit of working together to accomplish goals. Digging in and refusing to help out or do a task because of a pedantic issue does nothing but frustrate and anger those you may need to rely upon at a later date. Listening, reading, interpreting, inferring, and trying to anticipate will always get you much farther. If the message is lost to the point where everyone would like to scream at you, no one wins and you have lost everything.
Keep in mind that everyone has value and that just because you have elevated your education or taken the time to study something does not mean that the person you are talking to is ignorant or incapable. (I know I have to think about this all of the time. Not everyone understands what I do.) It simply means that you are proving that you can be a pedantic a** and we probably won't pay attention to you when you do have something important to say or ask.
Work for the common good. Help each other out. Create an atmosphere we enjoy around you rather than a bubble of negative space. Your negativity only moves others to treat you the same as you have treated them. So much more can be done when we aren't worried about how you are going to respond.
***I used we rather than I because this represents the people around you. If you are not engaged by coworkers often that may mean that you are the pedantic one.
****This article in no way singles any specific person out but rather endeavors to illustrate the need for a sense of urgency about the students rather than the educated adults.
